SF NACE 2013 Gala Tabletop Design Competition: Judge’s Pick Winner!

The National Association of Catering and Events’ San Francisco chapter held their annual gala and fundraiser last week. N.A.C.E. is an association for event industry professionals committed to providing superior education, networking & resources to enhance career success and deliver excellence to clients. I have attended many insightful meetings and met several of my wonderful vendors through the group and their events. Having finished my last wedding of 2013 on Monday, the gala seemed like the perfect way to celebrate a successful season. Then I heard about the design competition. Even though my new mommy brain said “no, no, I need rest,” my professional and go-getter brain shouted “bring it on!” So I applied and was selected to compete among talented event designers at the gala.

To showcase my work in front of so many peers was pretty nerve-racking. But it was all worth it, as getting awarded as the Judge’s Pick winner in front of them is one of the most memorable moments in my career so far. I have to thank my vendors who helped me bring my whimsical and romantic vision to life.

Frances Lane Event Rentals for providing the decorative tabletop items, La Fleuriste for understanding my love of flowers and whimsy, La Tavola Fine Linen and the girls in their SF showroom for always welcoming me with a smile when I drop in to play with linens and pull swatches, Pretty Please Bakeshop for making the Swedish cake place cards, DJ Jason Mitchell for contributing the uplighting and a big thanks to Chung Li for taking these beautiful photos of my table.

It was an honor to be included in a group of such creative people. Thank you to my competitors, who designed gorgeous tablescapes of their own, and to the judge’s who noticed the small details and personal touches on my table. Outside of the competition, the event itself was beautiful and so much fun. Shout out to the Gala Committee who put it on this year – you did a splendid job!

Why I love my job.

True Love | photo by Jack and Neci Photography

Just 6 weeks after my son was born, I was at Beltane Ranch producing a wedding. Some thought I was crazy to take on a wedding so soon, but it just felt right. The clients were such a wonderful couple, and I was getting to do what I love. DESIGN. So, I saw it through, and I am so glad I did.

Everything came together perfectly. From the spectacular team of vendors to the execution of the design I had worked so hard on. My clients and their guests were raving about the wedding and the design (and me!) the entire time. But it wasn’t this that had me on cloud nine as I drove home a couple days later.

It was the undeniable love shared between my clients. They were so happy with their wedding day. They sent me home with a thank you note so sweet, it made me shed happy tears. It wasn’t just that they were happy with my services (though of course that is important), but because they were so happy with each other. Throughout the wedding day, it was apparent I was in the presence of TRUE LOVE. And to be able to create a day this special and memorable to inspire them to write me such kind compliments made me the happiest person.

It felt like a defining moment in my career. On that drive home, I realized this is why I do what I do. TRUE LOVE. Witnessing this on a regular basis as part of my job is a gift. As is getting to help my clients celebrate it. Yes, I’m a romantic. A complete believer in soul mates, the one, true love, you name it.

So, I just want to thank my clients for falling in love and trusting me to create a magical day to honor them.

Joie de vivre,

Kaella Lynn
